Shambhala Day 2018

Year of the Earth Dog

Join Nashville Shambhala Meditation Group for celebrations of Shambhala Day 2018 marking the beginning of the New Year. The day represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism. It is based upon the traditional Tibetan New Year’s celebration and is one of the holidays marked by Shambhala communities worldwide. On Shambhala Day, we gather to enjoy traditions of our warrior culture, receive direction and teachings from the Sakyong, and celebrate the beginning of a new year as a global community.

This day is particularly associated with reflecting upon the year that has passed, and setting our intentions for the future. In local communities, the celebration allows us to express the wealth and richness of our spiritual and cultural heritage through feasting, conviviality, elegance and pomp. This coming year is the Earth Dog Year. In the animal zodiac, dog year individuals are the most humanitarian, are selfless givers, and strive for justice and equality. They are fiercely loyal, decent, and courageous and are also magnanimous and prosperous. With the added element of earth, the energy of the dog is efficient, grounded, and vigilant.

We can all aspire to bring the generosity and stability of the Earth Dog Year into our lives and local communities this coming year and to further the critical work of Shambhala to transform fear and aggression into wisdom and compassion. The world has never needed it more.
